Permanent Hair Reduction
Everything you ever wanted to know about permanent hair reduction and more…
How does laser hair reduction work? There are a couple options, both of which rely on heated lights: Laser beam or intense pulsed light (IPL). Lasers are focused beams, whereas IPL uses interspersed flashes. While one visit will result in approximately 40% of hair removal, it takes about 5 visits to kill as much as 70% of the hair. Hair grows in three cycles and in order to get as much of it as possible, the hair needs to be in the catagen phase. It’s recommended to make an appointment every four weeks to “catch” the hair while in this phase.

Who is a good candidate for laser hair reduction? Lasers work best on people with a good contrast between the hair and skin – the lighter the skin and darker the hair, the more effective the treatments. These days there are even options for women with darker skin and lighter hair. Keep in mind darker skin may require a few more sessions for best hair removal results.
Are hair reduction results guaranteed? It is not possible to predict how successful lasers will work for everyone. Results depend upon the quality of the laser, the type of hair you have, and the number of procedures you have done in the past. Never trust a company that guarantees hair removal. Try a consultation in person before you sign up.

How much does laser hair reduction cost? Laser hair removal is not inexpensive; costs range from $40 to $400 a session depending on where you live and the areas of your body being treated. It usually takes about 5 laser treatments to permanently get rid of up to 70% of hair. Touch-ups are always an option at costs from $10 to $150 a session.
Can there be scarring from hair reduction? As with any laser treatment, there is always a slight risk of burning. If a laser treatment is not done correctly by a trained professional, you could end up scarred for life. For this very reason you want to avoid discount laser treatment shops and get treated by a trained technician at an established facility. Professional laser service providers do not offer discounts any more than you would expect to see discount offers at your doctor’s office. Licenses and certifications should be displayed prominently at these locations – if not, avoid them.
What about in-grown hairs? Because the heat of lasers kill the hair follicle, hair can’t grow back at treated locations. This means that the in-grown hairs you often get with just waxing or shaving are not a problem found with laser hair reduction.
